I'm fundraising for The Run Beyond Project.

A charity close to my heart, The Run Beyond Project empowers students by asking them to go beyond their comfort zone. These students aren't runners. They're high school students from a variety of circumstances who commit to undertaking this program in order to develop personal and social capabilities that see them not only get to the finish line of their Goal Race, but thrive beyond this, personally and as contributing members to their communities. They are young people who have had the same opportunities as you and I.

Run Beyond has graduated over 300 students so far, including 59 indigenous students, 38 students from refugee backgrounds, and 12 who have been in out-of-home care, as well as students impacted by numerous other factors such as exposure to discrimination and long-term parental unemployment.

I'm participating in The Beyond Barriers Virtual Run and going beyond my limits to empower these students in need! Any donation you can give, large of small, will have a huge impact on the lives of these young people.

My Updates

DAY 21: A GOAL STARTS WITH A DREAM

Friday 22nd Dec
A goal without a dream is not as meaningful than one with a strong 💪🏼 one. After achieving first place in a memorable running challenge where I ran 13km in -2 degrees in Busan, South Korea to narrowly take out the crown 👑 in 2022, I set myself another dream - to complete this challenge with my head held high no matter what the outcome. I started the 2023 Challenge with a strong day 1 (ran 51km for the day). My contest almost ended on day 4 when both knees were aching and a busy work schedule meant that I couldn’t complete long runs due to fatigue, so I got by with multiple shorter runs. One of the highlights was completing several 10km runs in the heat, as well as a monster 24km run with Dr Ken who appears in my new book TRAILBLAZING. On Day 19 of the challenge my left knee began to feel quite intense pain after 2km. Luckily my father’s support helped me numb the pain to complete the challenge here in Kochi, Shikoku, Japan 🇯🇵 with a total of 529km ran over the 21 days averaging 25km daily…. Thanks to all the supporters of The Run Doc and what he stands for. 🏃🏿 🏃‍♀️ 🏃‍♂️

DAY 20: RUNNING IN MY LOWEST

Thursday 21st Dec
I’ve just completed 3km in icy cold 🥶 temperatures (0 degrees, and -2 degrees Celsius with wind-chill effect) here in Anaga, Awajishima 🇯🇵. I am thinking about everyone when I braced running in the cold 🥶. A special message for those young people following my journey - it’s important to train in conditions you are “uncomfortable” or “unfamiliar” with. This will broaden your knowledge and experience - BEYOND BARRIERS!

DAY 18: IZUMI-SANO (OSAKA), JAPAN 🇯🇵

Tuesday 19th Dec
When my students tell me, I had a good run today because it was ideal weather and it felt easy. I usually encourage them to train when it feels “uncomfortable” so it will feel a lot easier during an ultra. Today, after training in 43 degrees Celsius I got to jog in my fav temperature (3 degrees) and raised no sweat the entire run.

DAY 16: VISITING THE GREAT WALL (of Greenwich)

Sunday 17th Dec
At 24km this has been my longest continuous run of the challenge, great to complete this with friends. 🙏🏻👌👍🏻

DAY 14: ANOTHER HOT ONE

Friday 15th Dec
Manage to do several run commutes to work and then to several rendezvouses… finished the day with a nice hot matcha 🍵 latte done the authentic way, not too sweet. Finished the day with …. A run 🏃‍♀️!

DAY 12: A DAY OF UPWARDS MOBILITY

Tuesday 12th Dec
Started off the day a bit groggy 🥴 and was literally a zombie for my first run, then was able stitch multiple back to back 10kms in the cooler “heat”. Running with mates made the job a lot easier as did doing it in a manageable pace. "It is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring about the most lasting change." HRM QUEEN ELIZABETH II Also stoked to see my new book, TRAILBLAZING is now on the Amazon #1 list in three categories.

DAY 10: SLOW AND STEADY

Sunday 10th Dec
Taking advantage cooler conditions today to stretch out my legs. 🦵 Glad they are still holding up for the challenge.

THE HOTTEST DAY 🥵

Saturday 9th Dec
Started the hottest day (43 degrees) of the challenge with 2 runs, the second of which was around the Sydney Harbour Foreshore. Still feeling thirst after guzzling a 600ml Powerade drink.

DAY 6: ITS GONNA BE A HOT 🥵 ONE

Friday 8th Dec
Runners battle it out in the elements. Heat is one of them.
Today is planning to be a hot one (31 degrees) and tomorrow a scorcher (43 degrees).

The Best Route is when ….

Thursday 7th Dec
… there are no set routes. You run as you feel, to the pace that your body needs and wants, and to any place your mind desires! That’s running freedom! (THINK Forest Gump)

RUNNING IN THE HEAT 🥵

Tuesday 5th Dec
Back to back to back runs…

- try to prehydrate before the run
- drink a lot and keep drinking (sips)
- wear appropriate ☀️ sun protective for the face and neck
- keep the pace slower for each degree heat.

Fuelling for the Runs

Tuesday 5th Dec
Carbs. And more carbs…

Day Three: Running Flow

Monday 4th Dec
Flow is a popular concept.

Introduced to the world by the psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in the 1990s, it as a state of mindless grace where one acts at optimal performance without having to think about it.

Or in Csikszentmihalyi's words: "Flow is the mental state of operation in which a person performing an activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energised focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity."

Participating in the Beyond Barriers Challenge has given me a good opportunity for us to practise our “running flow”.

I COMMUTED TO PICK UP THR BREAD 🍞

Sunday 3rd Dec
Did a 6km from my home and ran to the corner shop (second closest one) to pickup the bread. 🍞

Tip: don’t run with bread which is wrapped with paper. The paper frays when you are running with it and you end of up with slices of bread on the road before they go into the toaster 😉

WHY I AN RUNNING?

Saturday 2nd Dec
Another reason I will be participating in this event is to make my fellow clinicians and clients aware of the dangers of latent coronary artery disease and depression. Several of my close colleagues have succumbed to these conditions. In my new book TRAILBLAZING I will be discussing how the act of running literally saved my life.

🙏🏻 Thank You

Thursday 30th Nov
Feeling a good start coming on my journey of discovery in this year’s Beyond Borders Challenge 2023….
With each new donor and donation dollars created a further design to progress in this worthwhile cause.

Knowledge is Power

Wednesday 29th Nov
I support this worthwhile cause because for students from a disadvantaged background I value the importance of empowering them with skills like goal setting and learning how to work towards and succeed in their goals.
